The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
