Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
