A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
